Toponym is a work of poetic-documentary montage, a journey through form that segues between found texts and images, traversing registers that are in turn technical, lyrical, scientific and archival. Its compass extends from the illuminators of medieval Central Asia to the nocturnal cormorant fishermen of 1950s Peking; from a surveyor’s passage through Victorian London to an historian’s taxonomy of shadow; and from Renaissance autobiography to the musicological diagrams of a modernist composer.
Where once narrative was shared in the ritualised gatherings of Boccaccio’s Florentine storytelling nobility, or imparted through the rites and festivities of the ancient Roman calendar, in Toponym it becomes a polyphony of verbal and visual fragments haunted by the placelessness that is the mark of the library, the archive and the imagination. The act of reading moves beyond language: unfurling across material surfaces, articulating the mineral and the molecular, the chromatic and the textile.

Il volume è l’antologia di saggi e articoli di Lewis Baltz scritti tra il 1975 e il 2007, tratti da primarie pubblicazioni di critica quali Art in America, il Times Literary Supplement, L’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui e Purple.
Il volume raccoglie testi su Edward Weston, Walker Evans, Robert Adams, Michael Schmidt, Allan Sekula, Chris Burden, Thomas Ruff, Jeff Wall, Félix González-Torres, John McLaughlin, Slavica Perkovic e Krzysztof Wodiczko, tra gli altri.
Questa pubblicazione restituisce all’esperienza letteraria di Baltz l’importanza che le spetta e offre al lettore un punto di vista unico nell’esperienza storico-artistica di alcuni dei più importanti fotografi del Novecento.

Da sempre, l'uomo pensa per immagini. Ma l'approccio visuale manifesta oggi una sua particolare attualità. Viviamo infatti in una cultura che dall'immagine è intensamente dominata. Di fronte al riaffacciarsi della potenza della rappresentazione iconica, che già l'antichità aveva conosciuto e talvolta condannato come idolatria, rimessa in contatto con la sua portata conoscitiva ma anche con la sua natura ingannatrice, la cultura contemporanea ha fatto propria la sfida dell'immagine creando un nuovo universo scientifico, guello degli "studi visuali", che questo libro indaga secondo una prospettiva inedita, attenta all'intersezione fra i tradizionali domini dell'estetica e il mondo delle scienze. La presenza dell'immagine non è infatti confinata all'arte. E non si estende solo alla pubblicità e al design, ma include anche la scienza e la tecnica (si pensi per esempio al significato dell'immagine nell'ambito della diagnostica medica). Anche nel caso della conoscenza scientifica, come già nell'arte, si impongono stili della visione. Apprendendo che spesso conosciamo il mondo attraverso l'immagine, diveniamo edotti della natura storica del nostro modo di vedere e di intuire. E comprendiamo come, nel succedersi degli stili della visione, si avvicendano i mondi culturali.

Henry Beyle, il nome racchiude un omaggio a Stendhal, è una minuscola casa editrice. Pubblica, in tiratura limitata, circa 25 titoli l'anno; la collana con cui, nel marzo 2009, ha avviato il suo lavoro si intitola Piccola biblioteca degli oggetti letterari, contiene storie di bibliofili e avventure librarie; il suo progetto era (ed è) quello di creare una camera con vista dove ci fosse spazio per raccontare i singoli elementi del creare, leggere, collezionare libri. Subito dopo è nata la Piccola biblioteca dei luoghi letterari, dedicata a paesaggi, mete, descrizioni geografiche. I Quaderni di prosa e di invenzione desiderano essere "l'universale" della HB; al suo interno infatti i temi trattati sono diversi: un microcosmo di testi brevi (come è tradizione) in cui tornano il design, la cucina, l'amore, i ricordi. La brevità si ancora ancora più esigua nei Piccoli quaderni di prosa e di invenzione: il minimo... una frase, un rigo appena, ma detto da Proust, Benjamin, Caproni, Saba e tanti altri.

 Questo volume mostra per la prima volta i tanti progetti realizzati nel mondo per recuperare il suolo, o per rendere nuovamente fruibili le porzioni di territorio che nell’ultimo secolo hanno subito l’aggressione dell’industrializzazione e di altri fenomeni di trasformazione e sviluppo che ne hanno compromesso la qualità originaria.
In secondo luogo, il libro fornisce un itinerario consapevole delle possibilità di re-invenzione di spazi alterati, aree sfruttate, ambiti impoveriti attraverso progetti multidisciplinari che abbiano la capacità di ripensare radicalmente una nuova, contemporanea idea di paesaggio. Si tratta di terreni bonificati, cave recuperate, ex discariche, Terrains Vague, ambiti inutilizzati che negli ultimi venti anni sono stati riconosciuti come spazi potenziali per una nuova ricchezza sociale, economica, ambientale e che diventano occasione di una nuova forma di progetto contemporaneo.
I progetti sono organizzati per “grandezze” di territorio recuperato con una selezione ragionata di progetti internazionali ed effettivamente realizzati, così da descrivere i risultati fin qui ottenuti e i benefici apportati e aprendo una finestra su possibili scenari futuri.

Architecture Post Mortem surveys architecture’s encounter with death, decline, and ruination following late capitalism. As the world moves closer to an economic abyss that many perceive to be the death of capital, contraction and crisis are no longer mere phases of normal market fluctuations, but rather the irruption of the unconscious of ideology itself. Post mortem is that historical moment wherein architecture’s symbolic contract with capital is put on stage, naked to all. Architecture is not irrelevant to fiscal and political contagion as is commonly believed; it is the victim and penetrating analytical agent of the current crisis. As the very apparatus for modernity’s guilt and unfulfilled drives-modernity’s debt-architecture is that ideological element that functions as a master signifier of its own destruction, ordering all other signifiers and modes of signification beneath it. It is under these conditions that architecture theory has retreated to an 'Alamo' of history, a final desert outpost where history has been asked to transcend itself. For architecture’s hoped-for utopia always involves an apocalypse. This timely collection of essays reformulates architecture’s relation to modernity via the operational death-drive: architecture is but a passage between life and death.

Sulla natura oscura del disegno e dell'architettura

Il disegno è sempre stato fatto di poco, ma ora sembra essersi ridotto a meno di niente, un niente d'essenza e di consistenza. Ha ancora senso occuparsi e preoccuparsi del disegno in quanto tale? Ha ancora senso distinguere il disegno d'architettura dal progetto quando tutta l'attenzione si è finalmente concentrata sul prodotto e sul processo produttivo? Il disegno si è per lo più trasformato in disegno tecnico e si è attivamente protetto contro ogni incertezza: istruzioni, comandi e codici limitano al minimo il tempo della divagazione e i margini di indeterminazione. Il progetto fugge dal disegno come dalla propria cattiva coscienza, l'insofferenza nei suoi confronti è paura del vuoto, e così il foglio e lo schermo si riempiono di cose e di azioni, che però sono cose e azioni diminuite: componenti elementari, primitive grafiche, cornici e griglie regolari. L'urgenza di chiudere ogni contorno riduce a zero l'istante dell'apparizione, il momento in cui nella massa del reale e del virtuale qualcosa si separa e diventa qualcosa. Eppure il disegno potrebbe essere il luogo e l'occasione in cui si rigenera lo stupore per il fatto che le cose e le opere semplicemente sono.

From the introduction by Martin Parr: Consider these facts. In Italy the right to worship, without discrimination, is enshrined within the constitution. There are 1.35 million Muslims in Italy and yet, officially, only eight mosques in the whole country.One consequence is that the Muslim population have accumulated a huge number of makeshift and temporary places of worship. These are housed in a variety of buildings including lock ups, garages, shops, warehouses and old factories.This shortage of places to worship is particularly acute in north east Italy – where the photographer Nicolò Degiorgis lives – home to many anti-Islamic campaigns headed by the right wing party Lega Nord. The dull images of the many and diverse buildings that house the makeshift mosques are printed on folded pages. You open up the gatefold to reveal the scenes inside the mosques, shot in full colour. The size of the gatherings varies, from large crowds who sometimes pray outside to a small room full to bursting, or to intimate groups of two or three Muslims.Degiorgis provides a fascinating glimpse of hidden world and leaves the conclusions about this project entirely in our own hands.

E’ un libro, anzi sono quattro.
Contenuti in un cofanetto stampato in mille copie numerate, ognuno di essi contiene un racconto e una serie fotografica dedicata ai quattro elementi: acqua, aria, terra e fuoco.4 è nato dalla collaborazione tra il collettivo fotografico TerraProject e Wu Ming 2.Il progetto, curato da Renata Ferri e disegnato da Ramon Pez, è un dialogo tra il linguaggio della scrittura e quello della fotografia.4 è anche una mostra itinerante, curata da Daria Filardo, che ha visto la prima tappa allo spazio espositivo Le Murate di Firenze durante il mese di novembre 2013. This book documents a hitchhike along China’s Cross-Desert Highway, a road built in the mid 1990s to help the extraction of oil. It stretches for more than 500km from north to south across the Taklamakan, one of the world’s most inhospitable deserts. The journey records the road and its people - truck drivers, cotton pickers, oil well workers and prostitutes, whose lives are caught up in the dependancy and desolation of the prospering oil industry.






The Most Beautiful Swiss  Book 2013


The Swiss Federal Office of Culture organizes the competition ‘The Most Beautiful Swiss Books’ on an annual basis. It thereby recognizes excellence in the field of book design and production, as well drawing attention to remarkable and contemporary books by Swiss designers, printers and publishers. 
The competition celebrates its seventieth anniversary this year. In January 2014, a five-member jury awarded 22 books as the most beautiful Swiss books of 2013. Subsequently, the book 'Meret Oppenheim. Worte nicht in giftige Buchstaben einwickeln' was awarded the Golden Letter at the international competition 'Most Beautiful Books from all over the world' – the highest distinction of its kind. The most beautiful Swiss books will be presented in Leipzig in March 2014 on the occasion of Switzerland participation as host country at the Leipzig Book Fair.

De La Villette (1982) au Zoo de Vincennes (2014) et du Joyce's Garden (1976) aux Event-cities 1, 2 et 3 (1994-2005), Bernard Tschumi a essaimé à travers le monde une ode à l'« évènement architectural » comme dis-/trans-/programmation – si possible frelatée, modifiée, transcendée. À mi-chemin de Lausanne (où il a grandi) et de New York (où il exerce), la France accueille d'autres réalisations : des écoles au Fresnoy et à Marne-la-Vallée, des Zénith à Rouen et Limoges ou deux parcs à Cenon et Alésia. Compatriote et ancien chef de projet pour le concours de La Villette, Luca Merlini nous offre un insulaire poétique et personnel, d'îles visibles et de villes invisibles, permettant de nous retrouver dans cet archipel... ou de nous y perdre !

Rarement les ritournelles d’un grand architecte n'auront autant marqué une génération – la nôtre. Le maestro hollandais a certes su conjuguer à la perfection propositions formelles et jalons bibliographiques ; mais c’est par le luxe que le Citizen K vient d'atteindre la consécration auprès d'un public cultivé et mondialisé. Manipulateur décomplexé des signes et des univers culturels, il a eu le don d’exercer sur beaucoup, j’en suis, une espèce de fascination coupable. Il fallait dépeindre un portrait de « Monsieur K » – avec ses moments-clés et ses revirements. Car rappelons-nous ce que Pierre Bourdieu avait dit de Manet : « Qu’est-ce que c’est que ces personnages qui, tout en étant tout à fait in, sont tout à fait out ? C’est cela un révolutionnaire symbolique ».
