California and the Disappearance of the Outside

A few days ago I wrote a post on the book by Stefano Catucci Learning from the Moon, the book tells the story of two photographs that have changed in a sense, the perception of our planet. These photos have influenced our way of thinking about the world, art and much more. This book is recommended for those who want to follow a thread of a conversation begun in 1966.
When a young man named Stewart Brand handed out buttons in San Francisco reading: 'Why haven t we seen a photograph of the whole Earth yet?' Two years later, the NASA photograph of the 'blue planet' appeared on the cover of the Whole Earth Catalog. In creating the catalog, frequently described as the analog forerunner of Google, Brand had founded one of the most influential publications of recent decades. It mediated between cyberneticists and hippies, nature romantics and technology geeks, psychedelia and computer culture, and thus triggered defining impulses for the environmentalist movement and the rise of digital network culture.
The exhibition 'The Whole Earth' is an essay composed of cultural-historical materials and artistic positions that critically address the rise of the image of One Earth and the ecological paradigm associated with it. The accompanying publication includes image-rich visual essays that explore key themes: 'Universalism, Whole Systems, Boundless Interior,' and 'Apocalypse, Babylon, Simulation,' among others. These are surrounded by critical essays that shed light on the 1960s California counterculture and the network culture that emerged from it. With contributions by Sabeth Buchmann, Mercedes Bunz, Diedrich Diederichsen, Kodwo Eshun, Anselm Franke, Erich Hörl, Norman M. The city is often depicted as a sort of self-organizing chaos. This collection of essays, edited by Pier Vittorio Aureli, makes the case for the opposite hypothesis: The city is always the result of political intention, often in the form of specific architectural projects. Cities are shaped not only by material forces, but also by cultural and didactic visions. This thesis is substantiated by eight thoroughly researched essays scrutinizing a fascinating line-up of urban conditions across more than two thousands years of history: from the political theology of the Islamic city to the political economy of Renaissance architecture; from the rise of public architecture in 17th-century France to the laissez-faire development of the contemporary Greek city; from the exemplary teachings of Jean-Nicolas-Louis Durand to the collaborative work of Hannes Meyer; and from the plan of the Mesoamerican metropolis to that of the Fordist factory floor. In challenging the split between theory and practice, The City as a Project reveals the powerful ways in which the city arises from the constant interaction between ideas and spatial conditions.

Weaponized Architecture is an examination of the inherent instrumentalization of architecture as a political weapon; research informs the development of a project which, rather than defusing these characteristics, attempts to integrate them within the scene of a political struggle. The proposed project dramatizes, through its architecture, a Palestinian disobedience to the colonial legislation imposed on its legal territory. In fact, the State of Israel masters the elaboration of territorial and architectural colonial apparatuses that act directly on Palestinian daily lives. In this regard, it is crucial to observe that 63% of the West Bank is under total control of the Israeli Defense Forces in regards to security, movement, planning and construction. Weaponized Architecture is thus manifested as a Palestinian shelter, with an associated agricultural platform, which expresses its illegality through its architectural vocabulary. The book includes interviews with Bryan Finoki and Raja Shehadeh and will be published both in paperback and as an expanded mobile book, withAugmented Reality [AR] interaction, so the content itself will be expanded through mobile devices.

Da sempre Beirut, tra i bagliori di una città aperta - al tempo stesso orientale e occidentalizzata, cristiana e musulmana, moderna ma profondamente radicata in una storia che ha visto passare Pompeo, Saladino, i Pascià Jazzar e Ibrahim - e gli incubi di un luogo esposto di continuo alla guerra, con i suoi abitanti di svariata provenienza, i suoi scrittori e artisti, i suoi contrasti ed eccessi, continua ad alimentare l'immaginario piú variegato. Restituendo alla città i mille volti della sua storia, Samir Kassir ci racconta le grandi contraddizioni della prima metropoli del mondo arabo. Spesso idealizzata in passato per lo scenario felice e la natura lussureggiante, nella seconda metà del Novecento Beirut vive la sua età dell'oro, ponendosi al centro di interessi economici che superano i confini della piccola Repubblica Libanese. Al proprio potere di attrazione la città sottomette anzitutto i vicini arabi, che vi affluiscono in massa: Beirut con la sua dolce vita rappresenta l'Occidente piú vicino, Svizzera d'Oriente e Piccola Parigi. Ed è allo stesso tempo luogo di ritrovo di esuli e intellettuali, fucina di idee e crogiolo di lingue e di culture. Tutto questo subirà una prima battuta d'arresto nel 1967 con la guerra dei sei giorni, per spegnersi del tutto nel 1975, quando il nome Beirut diventa sinonimo di guerra civile. Quindici anni di bombe e sangue che squarciano i muri e gli animi e riempiono i giornali, orfani della guerra del Vietnam. Estroversa e cosmopolita nella prosperità, la città lo sarà anche nella rovina, diventando il teatro della prima guerra evento televisivo. Dalle ceneri del tragico conflitto Beirut tenterà di rinascere e affronterà con coraggio la ricostruzione, senza tuttavia risolvere definitivamente le sue lacerazioni.

Numero Monografico della rivista dedicato alla città di Beirut, ne racconta la storia, la lenta stratificazione di luoghi, di spazi. legge il sovrapporsi tra limiti invisibili che segnano il territorio più dell'architettura.
Contemporaneamente il numero è una guida irrinunciabile agli edifici più importanti della città in continua evoluzione.
Una ricostruzione lenta piena di contraddizioni, ma anche il lento fluire di una storia che da sempre segna questa terra.
Forse uno dei migliori e più curati numeri della rivista fiorentina.
Insieme al libro di Kassir e alle fotografie di Elkoury uno strumento per comprendere un città.

This book presents photographs from Fouad Elkoury's forty-year career. From Beirut to Paris, from Cairo to Istanbul, and in other places where Elkoury has left a part of himself behind, his images form a pictorial autobiography across different cultures. Regardless of his subject - concrete skeletons of skyscrapers under construction, an armed solder waiting behind a bank of sandbags, a fur coat drying on a clothesline - Elkoury's photographs convey the unavoidable passing of time.

Il libro consiste in un’indagine sul rapporto tra arti plastiche e architettura. In particolare, ciò che ha interessato questa ricerca è una specifica declinazione di tale rapporto: il sistema complesso di relazioni tra pratiche parallele, vissute in presa diretta, nelle arti plastiche come nel progetto, nella condizione di doppia vitalità creativa dell’architetto-pittore. Concentrandosi su Le Corbusier, quale figura paradigmatica del ‘900, l’autore ha compiuto un’attenta rilettura degli episodi significativi della vita del maestro, con il preciso scopo di chiarirne l’evoluzione del potenziale creativo e il suo contributo decisivo nel progetto. Il testo esamina le modalità di interazione tra le differenti pratiche artistiche, nella condizione del quotidiano operare di Le Corbusier, tra arti plastiche e progetto. Interazioni che si realizzano attraverso categorie fondamentali, invarianti e trasversali. Obiettivi precisi di tale armoniosa interdisciplinarità, definita nella “Synthèse des Arts Majeurs”, sono: il raggiungimento di un nuovo ordine dell’arte e dell’architettura nell’età della macchina e la ricerca di un durevole equilibrio tra scienza e arte, tra pensiero e sentimento.

Questa è una riflessione, di un architetto, sull'eterno divenire delle cose. La realtà dei mortali: una continua trasformazione in sequenze temporali che, ciclicamente, rimescola le carte della storia dei luoghi e dei destini di chi li abita.
La Sicilia, contesto iniziale prescelto e prediletta meta di tanti grandi viaggiatori, è la terra in cui tutto appare come una stratigrafia di questo lento, inesorabile e infinito panta rei. E' proprio da un'antica città della Sicilia –e dalla sua geografia– che trae origine e ispirazione questo breve testo. Attraverso un itinerario raccontato, tra grandi fabbriche del passato –da Siracusa a Roma, passando da Evora, Arles, Spalato, Sagunto e Gibellina– emergono, tra passato e presente, gli eterni mutamenti dei luoghi. Acquired by MoMA in 2005, is a collection of over 2,500 works on paper. Project Projects designed the catalogue for Compass in Hand, an exhibition of over 300 of these works, in addition to a catalogue raisonné for the entire collection. Grouped together in a slipcase, the two volumes are also available separately. The catalogue design process incorporated chance operations to determine the tint values of a series of gray divider pages throughout both books.
